Ram was sorting through his study when he stumbled upon an old album. As he turned the pages, he found himself transported back to his college days. It felt like just yesterday when he and Sultana met, a classic case of love at first sight, at least from his perspective.
After college, Ram started working while Sultana pursued her post-graduation. Despite their cultural and personality differences, they decided to get married. People doubted whether their marriage would last, given their contrasting backgrounds and personalities. Sultana was outgoing, dynamic, and emotional, while Ram was simple, logical, and grounded. But they believed that compatibility wasn't everything; it was how they dealt with their incompatibilities that truly mattered.
Both of them worked tirelessly to make ends meet, starting from scratch. The early years of their marriage were good, and they steadily progressed in their careers and life. Like any couple, they had occasional quarrels, but they always made up, with Ram often taking the first step.
Making up became an interesting time for them. Sometimes Sultana used it as an opportunity to show her displeasure and demanded that Ram make it up to her. Ram, knowing her nature, played along. Life seemed perfect for them until the day Sultana shared the incredible news that they were expecting a baby, bringing boundless joy to their lives.
They began planning for their new family member meticulously. However, one day, Sultana surprised Ram with an unexpected demand. She insisted that their baby should be born into their own house, not a rented one. Ram found it overwhelming since they had just purchased a car, and buying a house seemed like a herculean task. He tried to explain this to Sultana, but she remained adamant. She insisted that he buy a house for them, firmly stating that the second-hand car was not an excuse. Ram exhausted all his tricks but eventually had to concede defeat in the argument.
Ram began searching for an apartment, showing Sultana several options. However, she wasn't satisfied with any of them. Frustrated, Ram requested her to look at all the houses first, promising they could discuss it later at home. He stood his ground, and reluctantly, Sultana started looking at the houses, spending hours at each one. On their way back home, they stopped to get dinner.
During the discussion, Ram calculatedly explained that they didn't have enough money for an independent house at the moment, and they might not even be eligible for a home loan. He suggested taking an apartment for now and moving to an independent house in a few years. Sultana liked the idea and expressed her preference for the second building they had seen, which had a nearby park and a swimming pool. It was a spacious three-bedroom apartment with a clubhouse, beyond their means, but ready to move in. Ram reluctantly agreed.
The next day, Ram applied for a loan, and Sultana busied herself with decorating their new home. They threw a party and invited their friends. Their new house, although located a little far from the city, was spacious and garnered attention. Every evening, Ram and Sultana went for a walk, quickly becoming popular in the society.
One early morning, Sultana was startled by the doorbell. She opened it in her half-asleep state and was shocked to find her mother standing there. Thinking it was a dream, she closed the door. However, when the doorbell rang again, she realized it was real and opened the door to find her mother standing there. Overjoyed, she screamed with delight. Ram, panicking, rushed to the hall to find his in-laws, with whom they hadn't spoken for the past three years.
While Sultana was ecstatic, Ram was taken aback and unsure of how to react. An awkward silence filled the room, but Ram, being himself, took control of the situation. He offered them a cup of tea to make them feel at home. On that day, Sultana took leave from work to spend time with her parents and siblings. Ram, however, went to the office as usual.
Ram was perplexed by their unexpected visit and had many questions. Just as he was contemplating these thoughts, Sultana called him. Normally, he would never hesitate to answer her call, but today he was unsure. She requested Ram to bring her favorite Biryani for dinner. Ram was surprised, as Sultana was a vegetarian and didn't eat non-veg. She reminded him that her parents were there, and he had forgotten about it. Ram recalled the events and agreed to bring the Biryani, suggesting they also take her parents out for a movie. However, Sultana informed him that her parents were planning to leave the next day, and they should spend some time together at home instead. Ram, feeling uncomfortable, used the excuse of an important client meeting to avoid taking leave the next day. Sultana sensed his uneasiness and decided not to push him.
As time passed, Sultana grew weaker during her pregnancy and felt uncomfortable going to the office. During one of her check-ups, she shared her concerns with her doctor, who advised her to take maternity leave until the delivery. Sultana followed the doctor's advice and applied for leave, choosing to stay at home.
A few months later, they were blessed with a baby boy, bringing immense joy into their lives. Due to complications during delivery, Sultana couldn't continue her job. Although she was happy to spend time with her baby, Ram had to take on additional responsibilities to support the family. He started spending more time in the office to earn extra incentives. At first, Sultana didn't notice the change, but eventually, she became worried.
One day, during dinner, she asked Ram if he had found a new girlfriend in the office. Exhausted from a hard day at work, Ram was not in the mood to answer such questions and ignored her. Sultana persisted, and Ram, irritated, responded harshly. This led to a heated argument, unlike their usual quarrels, and their frustrations poured out. It was the first time the neighbors could hear some noise from their house.
The next morning, Ram woke up early, but instead of wishing his wife and baby a good morning, he left for the office without having breakfast. Sultana, upset with Ram's behavior, impulsively took Zyan and left the house. Ram spent the entire day feeling upset and ashamed of his behavior, and he decided to return home.
When he arrived, he found the house locked. He tried calling Sultana's mobile, but it was switched off. Panicking, he sat down, unsure of what to do, and berated himself for getting angry over something trivial. He debated whether to call his in-laws or Sultana's friends, but he ultimately decided to search for her at familiar places. As he was about to get into his car, he received a call from an unknown number. Overwhelmed with emotions, he hesitated to answer, but when he gathered the strength to pick up, he heard Sultana's voice. She informed him that they were near the Movie Hall, not too far from their house, and asked him to come and pick them up. Ram wasted no time in asking questions and drove as fast as possible to reach them.
He found Sultana and Zyan safe and standing there, and he embraced them tightly, relieved to have found them. They got into the car, and while driving back, Sultana mentioned that they were hungry as they hadn't eaten since the afternoon. Ram snapped at her, questioning her intentions and asking about her mobile and purse, which she had left at home. In a low voice, she replied that everything was at home.
Zyan, unaccustomed to hearing his father speak in such a tone, started crying. Ram immediately stopped the car, took Zyan into his lap, and held him tightly, feeling the rhythm of their heartbeats. Sultana joined them, and they decided to go to a nearby restaurant instead of returning home. They spent the time together and went for a long drive. Exhausted, they returned home early the next morning. Ram took the day off work and spent it with Zyan. He didn't feel the need to ask Sultana about where she had been, and she didn't feel the need to explain what had happened.
After enjoying a good lunch, Sultana went to take a nap with Zyan in the afternoon, while Ram sat deep in thought. He wondered what had gone wrong the previous day and how he could rectify it. He started jotting down notes on a piece of paper, focusing not on the issues but on the solutions.
Ram realized that it wasn't just about marrying the right partner; it was about being the right partner himself. He understood that his behavior in a situation influenced his partner's reaction. He resolved to focus on himself, embracing the good qualities Sultana possessed while striving to be the best version of himself. He believed that this would inspire each other and create a stronger bond.
He acknowledged that they were both working towards the same goal - a happy life together. They knew each other's flaws and should give each other time to improve and work on them. Change wouldn't happen overnight, but they needed to give each other the opportunity to grow. Ram understood that every human had flaws, including himself and Sultana. Instead of dwelling on those shortcomings, he resolved to focus on their positive qualities and ignore their drawbacks. He vowed to be patient and give Sultana ample time to change, even if it took a lifetime, as long as he truly loved her.
Ram recognized that their relationship was invaluable and that he should love and support Sultana during her moments of self-doubt. He understood that marriage was more than just love; it involved a lifetime of work, worries, joy, sorrow, and everything in between. It required dealing with both small and big problems, internal and external struggles, and facing questions as a couple, all through loving communication.
He reflected on how their argument over an insignificant matter had escalated into a major quarrel, revealing his terrible mistake. He realized that he should stick to the point during discussions instead of drifting away. Respecting Sultana's views was crucial, just as he respected and peacefully disagreed with colleagues and superiors at work. He pondered why he should be chivalrous and courteous to other women but not to his own wife. He understood the importance of respecting relationships and the people around him.
As Ram continued to reflect, he realized that the warmth and inner peace they shared were far more important than any problem they encountered. They were two souls meant to be together, and he wondered why he had allowed insignificant issues to cloud their happiness.
Ram decided to continue adding more points to the list, to make their relationship and family even stronger. Sultana later found the note under the pillow, and upon reading it, she felt immense joy. She realized that Ram was making an extra effort to strengthen their relationship, and she resolved to reciprocate and follow his lead to the best of her ability. She left the note where it was, pretending she hadn't seen it, but she was determined to make their relationship thrive.
So, did they live happily ever after? Well, only time would tell, but with their newfound understanding, effort, and commitment, Ram and Sultana had laid the foundation for a resilient and loving partnership.
Did they live happily ??????
