Trunk Talks

I had a serious talk with my wife about how us humans are taking over the places where elephants roam and blocking their paths. We were so deep into this intense conversation when suddenly we mentioned the famous Arikomban! You can't talk about elephants without bringing up Arikomban, right?

Let me tell a bit about him, not too far away, in gods own country there lived an elephant named Arikomban. Now, Arikomban wasn't your ordinary elephant. He was well-known for his crazy and funny adventures that would make everyone laugh a lot!

One day, Arikomban found himself in a hilarious pickle. He was strolling through the jungle when he came across a bunch of mischievous monkeys. Those cheeky little monkeys decided to play a prank on him by stealing his beloved snacks! Can you imagine that? Arikomban was furious! He chased those monkeys up and down the trees, trumpeting and waving his trunk, but those nimble little rascals always stayed one step ahead. In the end, Arikomban had to accept that he couldn't win, but he made sure to have a serious conversation with the monkeys.

Now, Arikomban had a weakness for rice. He couldn't resist the delicious smell of it. So, whenever he passed by a local shop, his trunk would start twitching, and his tummy would rumble. He tried to resist, but one day, his cravings got the better of him. He snuck into a shop and munched on rice like there was no tomorrow! Of course, word got out about his secret rice feasts, and soon, people started calling him the "Rice-Raiding Elephant."

But Arikomban wasn't just famous for his food adventures. He was also known for his amazing dance moves! When the moon was full and the stars twinkled brightly, Arikomban would gather all his animal friends for a wild dance party in the jungle. He would sway his big body, stomp his feet, and trumpet with joy. Even the trees would join in the fun, swaying to the rhythm of Arikomban's funky beats.

One day, some sneaky humans thought they could outsmart Arikomban and capture him. They set up a clever trap, but little did they know that Arikomban had a few tricks up his sleeve, or rather, up his trunk! He used his mighty trunk to spray water all over them, making them slip and slide like clumsy penguins. Arikomban had them rolling on the ground in laughter! Eventually, they gave up and let Arikomban continue his hilarious adventures.

Throughout his journeys, Arikomban learned some valuable life lessons. He discovered that laughter is the best medicine, and sometimes it's okay to let loose and be a little silly. He taught everyone around him the importance of having a good sense of humor and finding joy in the simplest of things.

After a rollercoaster of a discussion with lots of good and bad points flying around, we finally called it a night. But guess what? The topic was still buzzing in my brain, and even in my dreams, I ended up interviewing Arikomban to let his voice be heard by the whole world!

ME: Hey there, Arikomban! I'm so excited to have you here for this super-duper interview. How's it going today, big guy?

Arikomban: Well, hello to you too! It's not every day that an elephant like me gets invited to an interview. I'm feeling pretty awesome, thanks for asking!

ME: That's fantastic, Arikomban! Now, let's dive right into the questions. Can you tell us a bit about yourself? How did you become such a famous elephant?

Arikomban: Oh, my story is quite unbelievable! It began when I was a small baby elephant in Kerala. I sadly lost my mother and ended up all by myself. I guess my story touched many people's hearts, and humans couldn't help but share it. Suddenly, I became extremely famous in no time, like the "Elephant of the Hour!"

ME: Arikomban! Now, let's talk about your exciting escapades. Some folks say you've been caught snacking on rice from local shops. What's that all about?

Arikomban: Oh, let me tell you about those hilarious rumors! Let's clear things up once and for all. Okay, I have to confess, I have a huge weakness for rice. Who can resist the deliciousness of a scrumptious meal? I mean, seriously, rice is just too good to pass up! Now, it's true that I may have been caught red-handed munching on some mouthwatering grains. But hey, let's be real here, I never intended any harm. Those shopkeepers should actually be thrilled that I chose their stores to satisfy my rumbling tummy! I added a little spicy twist to their boring routine, right? Who wouldn't want a dash of excitement and surprise while shopping? So, let's put those silly rumors to rest and celebrate the fact that I brought some extra flavor and entertainment to those lucky stores!

ME: (laughs) That's a funny way to look at it, Arikomban! Elephants hold a special place in our hearts. What makes you guys so amazing?

Arikomban: Well, let me tell you a little secret about us elephants. We're like nature's very own gentle giants, my friend! And oh boy, do we have some incredible features that make us stand out from the crowd. It all starts with our super-duper trunks. These amazing things can do it all! We use them to grab our favorite snacks, give a friendly "hello" to our pals, or even give someone a ticklish nudge when we're feeling mischievous. Trust me, our trunks are like the Swiss Army knives of the animal kingdom!

But wait, there's more! Our big, floppy ears are another incredible feature. Not only do they make us look absolutely adorable, but they also serve some serious purposes. You see, those oversized ears of ours have some impressive powers. First, they can cool us down on a hot, sunny day. It's like having our very own built-in air conditioner! And that's not all—they also help us detect the sound of a tasty treat being unwrapped from miles away. Can you believe it? We've got ears that are as good as a super-sensitive radar!

So, next time you see an elephant strutting its stuff, just remember the wonders of our trunks and the magic of our ears. We're like the superheroes of the animal kingdom, equipped with the most versatile trunks and the most fantastic ears you could ever imagine. We're nature's funny and spicy little surprise package, bringing joy, laughter, and some serious snack-sniffing skills wherever we go!

ME: You definitely have some awesome features, Arikomban! Now, let's talk about your recent adventure of being captured and relocated. How did you manage to put up such a fierce fight against the capture team?

Arikomban: Oh, let me paint you a vivid picture of the wild adventure that unfolded! Imagine this: a massive crew of 150 humans, along with four elephant buddies, and then there's little old me. Now, let me tell you, I wasn't exactly thrilled about leaving my cozy homeland. So, I decided to put on my best "I'm not budging an inch" face and give them a whole lot of resistance, Elephant-style!

I showed them that I'm a true force to be reckoned with, my friend. They thought they could just waltz in and convince me to go along with their plans, but oh boy, were they mistaken! I put up a trunkful of resistance, refusing to budge an inch. I made it crystal clear that I was no pushover.

They even tried some sneaky tricks to lull me to sleep, shooting those tranquilizer darts my way. But let me tell you, I wasn't fooled that easily! I dodged and weaved, giving them a run for their money. They underestimated my cleverness, my quick reflexes, and my unwavering determination.

But alas, my friend, even the greatest warriors have their weaknesses. Eventually, those crafty humans managed to outsmart me. They devised a plan that caught me off guard, leaving me with no choice but to yield. They played their cards right, and I had to admit defeat, albeit begrudgingly.

So there you have it, my spicy and adventurous tale. A clash of wits, a struggle for dominance, and a humbling lesson in the face of cunning humans. But mark my words, this mighty elephant shall always have a trick or two up his sleeve, ready to take on any challenge that comes his way!

ME: You sure gave them a run for their money, Arikomban! Finally, what message would you like to share with the world?

Arikomban: Ah, my dear humans, let's remember that we all share this beautiful planet. Let's respect each other's space and find ways to live together peacefully. Protect the forests, take care of the wildlife, and most importantly, never forget to smile! Life is too short to be grumpy. And if you happen to see me around, feel free to offer me a handful of rice—I'll gladly accept!

ME: Fantastic! Now, Arikomban, we've heard rumors about your impressive dance moves. Can you show us a little demonstration or describe your signature elephant dance?

Arikomban:Ah, the famous dance rumors! Well, you see, elephants aren't exactly known for their graceful twirls and fancy footwork. But when I'm in the mood, I can definitely bust a move or two. Imagine my big body swaying rhythmically, some synchronized steps with my elephant pals, and of course, the occasional trumpet to add some flair. It's an elephant boogie you won't want to miss!

ME: That sounds like quite a spectacle, Arikomban! Elephants have exceptional memories. Can you share with us one of your most memorable moments?

Arikomban: Ah, memories are like little treasures stored in my big brain! One of my most memorable moments was when I reunited with a long-lost elephant friend after being apart for years. We recognized each other from our younger days and celebrated with a joyful trumpeting symphony. It was a heartwarming reminder of the strong bonds we elephants share.

ME: That's absolutely beautiful, Arikomban. Elephants are also known as symbols of wisdom. If you could give one piece of advice to humans, what would it be?

Arikomban: Ah, the wise elephant in me has some advice to share! My advice to humans would be to slow down and enjoy the simple joys of life. Take a moment to listen to the rustling leaves, feel the warmth of the sun on your skin, and savor the taste of your favorite snack. Sometimes, it's the little things that bring us the most happiness.

ME: That's a wonderful reminder, Arikomban. Now, we've heard whispers about your secret talent for painting. Can you tell us more about your artistic endeavors?

Arikomban: (laughs) Ah, my secret talent exposed! Well, let me tell you, holding a paintbrush with a trunk isn't the easiest task, but I've tried my hand at painting. My artworks mostly have colorful strokes and abstract designs. They might not be as fancy as human artists' masterpieces, but they're a unique expression of my inner elephant artist.

ME: That's truly remarkable, Arikomban! We'd love to see your artwork someday. Lastly, if you could have a conversation with any other animal, who would you choose and why?

Arikomban: Ah, that's a tough one! But if I had to pick just one, I'd love to have a chat with a wise old owl. They seem to know everything and have a mysterious wisdom about them. I'd ask them about the secrets of the night, the ancient stories hidden in the moonlight, and maybe even learn a thing or two about perfecting my nighttime trumpet serenades.

ME: (laughs) That sounds like a magical conversation, Arikomban! Thank you so much for your answers. It's been an absolute joy talking to you.

Arikomban: The pleasure is all mine! Thanks for having me, and remember, keep those trunks up and smiles on your faces! Take care, my friends!

Just as I was about to request a selfie with Arikomban, I felt a gentle shake and realized it was my wife, waking me from my dream. Confused, she asked why I was laughing so uncontrollably. So, I shared the delightful tale of Arikomban, bringing a smile to her face.

If you're feeling blue, just imagine Arikomban, the side-splitting elephant who made everyone laugh their trunks off! you're strolling through the jungle, and suddenly you stumble upon him, busting some outrageous dance moves. Or imagine seeing him at a grocery store, munching on a bowl of rice like it's the tastiest thing in the world! His mischievous antics will have you rolling on the floor with laughter. Who knows, one day you might actually come across him and he'll turn your gloomy day into a hilarious adventure!

Why I Would Tell You Not to Buy a Holiday Home in Wayanad

Let me start with something that may sound strange coming from me. I live in Wayanad. I am building businesses here. I am involved in hospitality. I am working on holiday homes and nature based living. And still, if someone calls me and says, "Anup, I am thinking of buying a piece of land in Wayanad and building a homestay. What do you think?"   My first answer today is not, "Yes, go ahead." My first answer is, "Wait." Spend some time here. Understand Wayanad. Then decide. Because I have slowly realised that many people are not really investing in Wayanad. They are investing in a picture they have created in their minds about Wayanad. They see a beautiful piece of land. A mountain view. A stream running beside it. A lake somewhere nearby. Trees everywhere. Maybe the forest is just a few hundred metres away. The broker says, "Sir, this area is going to develop." The price still looks reasonable....

We Forgot Us

Srinivas was in his late fifties and, by every conventional definition, he was a successful man. He had spent most of his working life in one of the biggest corporate companies in Bengaluru. Good position, good salary, good house, good savings and a life that most people would look at and say, "What more do you want?" Saritha was working too. She was about six years younger than him, ambitious, independent and still very serious about her career. Their two children were doing well. One was working in the USA and the other was studying there.   From outside, the Srinivas family looked like one of those families who had got everything right.   Inside, something had slowly gone missing.   Their mornings were almost mechanical. They would wake up, go for their walk, come back, get ready and leave for work. Their offices were in different directions and the Bengaluru traffic made even a normal journey feel like a punishment. It was not that their offices were ver...

No Audience, Still Acting

I was having my tea the other morning, sitting on one of the small shacks near my construction site. A teenage girl walked past and waited at the bus stop across the road. It was clear something was special for her that day. Maybe her birthday, maybe an event in school. She kept adjusting her hair and her dress, and from the corner of her eye she checked if anyone was noticing her. That small moment pulled me into a long thought. Who are we when nobody is watching? I realised how often we live our life like someone is always looking at us. As if there is a stage, lights, and a crowd waiting to judge our next move. I lived that way too. Every smile measured, every word chosen, every silence planned. I knew how to act in rooms, how to fit in, how to be liked. What I did not see then was how temporary habits become permanent masks. Slowly the mask sticks so tight that one day you forget how your real face even looks. The mask was supposed to be something I take off when I feel safe. But a...
