Masha's Multicolored Mayhem

Every evening, it was a ritual for Max, Moose, and Masha to gather in the audio-video room with Tamanna. They would spend a few hours relaxing and watching television together. As the clock struck 7 pm, Moose's ears would perk up, a sign that he was alert and ready for something. Masha, on the other hand, would begin to whimper or pace, expressing her discomfort in the pen and hinting that she wanted the audio-video room door to be opened.

The scene resembles the electric atmosphere of fans eagerly awaiting a Rajinikanth movie premiere. As the theater gates open, a surge of excited fans rushes inside. Similarly, when Tamanna opens the audio-video room door, Max, Moose, and Masha all have a specific routine.

Once inside, they claim their designated spots. Max, perhaps seeking a cozy den, curls up contentedly beneath a chair. Moose, a devoted companion, settles down next to Tamanna's leg, wherever she chooses to sit. Masha, meanwhile, makes a beeline for her designated sofa, where she leaps in with a joyful pounce.

Tamanna is the undisputed leader of this viewing ritual. If she seems to be taking her time switching on the TV, or gets engrossed in her phone, Moose takes initiative. He gently nudges the remote control towards her with his wide paws, accompanied by a soft, affectionate scratch. Finally, when Tamanna does turn on the TV, a diverse selection of programs awaits them, ranging from anime to cartoons and even fashion shows.

Despite Max's indifference to the actual TV shows, he enjoys the cozy routine of the audio-video room. He finds a comfortable spot beneath a chair, content to curl up and take a nap amidst the excitement. In contrast, Moose and Masha are like wide-eyed children, bursting with enthusiasm as the TV flickers to life. They express their anticipation with a symphony of excited sounds – barks, meows, or happy whines – leaving no doubt about their eagerness.

Tamanna acts as the conductor of this viewing experience. If she dares to switch channels while Masha is engrossed in a captivating program, a playful pounce and a flurry of enthusiastic licks follow. Tamanna, a seasoned viewer by now, understands the message and promptly switches back to Masha's favorite show.

Moose, the mischievous adventurer of the group, thrives on action-packed movies. Superhero flicks are his absolute favorite, with Wonder Dog taking the top spot. Just like Masha, Moose has a way of communicating his preferences. If his chosen superhero is abruptly replaced by something less thrilling, he resorts to a gentle pawing or scratching at Tamanna, a silent plea to return to the world of capes and superpowers.

Reshma, nestled in her luxurious dressing room, was engrossed in the meticulous task of organizing her makeup collection. Her furry companion, Masha, sat attentively by her side, captivated by the dazzling array of colorful palettes and shimmering lipsticks. It was as if Masha, accustomed to witnessing makeup magic on TV screens and fashion runways, was finally experiencing it firsthand.

Suddenly, the peace was disrupted by a call from Reshma's 3D designer, working on her new interior project in Bangalore. Apparently, the new designer was struggling to grasp Reshma's vision. Initially, Reshma attempted to explain her ideas verbally, but frustration mounted as the designer seemed to miss the mark entirely. "Let's do a video call," Reshma declared, a hint of impatience in her voice. "I'll share my screen and walk you through it, so you can truly understand what I have in mind. Everything needs to be perfect."

With a flourish, Reshma grabbed her phone and switched to video call mode, completely oblivious to Masha's wide-eyed fascination with the makeup treasures left behind. Leaving the three of them – Reshma virtually present on the phone screen, Masha with her curious gaze, and the rest of the "pets" unattended in the dressing room, Reshma set off to tackle the design challenge.

Max, ever the vigilant guardian, perched in his usual corner of the dressing room. His keen eyes scanned the room, ensuring his fellow furry companions, Moose and Masha, weren't up to any mischief. Suddenly, his gaze landed on Masha. She was inching ever closer to Reshma's makeup kit, now gloriously sprawled across the vanity.

Alarm bells clanged in Max's mind. This open invitation for trouble was too much to bear. With a mighty "brake" – perhaps a powerful woof or a determined bark – Max issued a stern warning to Masha. But Masha, ever the curious soul, remained oblivious to his pleas.

Frustrated, Max resorted to his most potent weapon – his "musical tone." A series of mournful howls or excited barks, depending on the situation, usually garnered Reshma's attention. However, this time, disaster struck. From the depths of her study, a frustrated screech echoed through the house. "Max! Quiet!" Reshma demanded. A looming deadline for her work had her nerves on edge, and Max's well-intentioned serenade did little to ease her concentration.

Max, tail drooping in defeat, could only whimper in response. He had failed to avert a potential catastrophe.

Masha, ever the inquisitive soul, couldn't resist the siren call of the makeup wonderland. Reshma, upon returning to her dressing room after an hour, was met with a sight that would have been comical if it weren't so catastrophic. Masha, the once fair-looking canine, was now a riot of color. Her nose, usually a sleek black, sported a vibrant red hue, reminiscent of a badly applied blush. Around her eyes, haphazard strokes of black eyeliner resembled a raccoon's mask gone wrong. Even her tail, usually a source of pride, had been transformed into a rainbow monstrosity, each section a different shade of eyeshadow.

As if this wasn't enough, Masha had somehow managed to commandeer Reshma's stole. Draped haphazardly over her head, it resembled a flimsy attempt at a bridal veil. Moose, on the other hand, seemed blissfully unaware of the pandemonium he'd caused. He pranced around Reshma, tail wagging furiously, reeking of a powerful, unfamiliar perfume. A closer inspection would reveal the culprit – a shattered bottle of Reshma's expensive fragrance, its contents liberally distributed by Moose in his olfactory adventure.

Reshma's shriek echoed through the house, shattering the blissful ignorance of the furry culprits. "This is unbelievable!" she cried, exasperation lacing her voice. "Can't I leave you lot alone for a single minute?!" Max, ever the loyal defender, let out a bark in response. But his mournful whine seemed to say, "I called you, but you wouldn't listen!" Masha, sensing the impending storm, made a dash for Reshma's wardrobe, hoping to disappear into a maze of clothes and escape the inevitable scolding.

As Reshma surveyed the wreckage, her initial anger melted into a resigned sigh. With a sigh, she began the painstaking task of cleaning up the colorful chaos. In between scrubbing mascara off Masha's nose and detangling Reshma's stole from her tail, Reshma whipped out her phone and dialed a familiar number. "It's your pets again," she declared, her voice laced with a hint of amusement and a lot of exasperation. "They've completely destroyed my makeup kit. You'll be buying me a new one, of course."

I, after all, was 20 kilometers away, enjoying a day at a club. How, exactly, could I be held responsible for the furry mayhem that transpired in Reshma's dressing room?

The chaos wasn't over yet. Bath time was next on the agenda. Moose, a notorious bath-hater, would usually resort to dramatic flops and rolls on his towel in a desperate attempt to escape the sudsy ordeal. This time, however, things took a turn for the worse. Perhaps inspired by the colorful makeover Masha received, Moose decided to add some flair to his own bath routine. He somehow managed to get the towel tangled around his neck, resembling a makeshift bathrobe. Fueled by this newfound "superhero cape" and dreams of emulating Wonder Dog, Moose embarked on a misguided mission. With a determined glint in his eye, he scaled the top of his pen, completely oblivious to the danger lurking above. Reshma, witnessing this unfolding disaster, could only watch in disbelief as Moose launched himself into the air, convinced he could fly. The inevitable crash landing was brutal. Moose yelped in pain, the impact leaving him with a fractured leg. A trip to the vet was imminent.

Did this experience teach Moose a valuable lesson? Not quite. A few days later, Tamanna observed him excitedly chasing a spider across the floor. Initially, she assumed Moose was acting heroically, trying to rid the house of the eight-legged intruder. But as she watched closer, a horrifying truth dawned on her. Moose wasn't trying to chase the spider away – he was actively trying to get bitten! Perhaps, in his delusional mind, a spider bite would grant him the coveted powers of Spiderman.

This incident, coupled with the other, pushed Reshma to a breaking point. A drastic decision was made – a ban on television and mobile devices for the dogs. It was an unorthodox solution, to say the least. After all, such restrictions were usually reserved for children, not canine companions. But for Reshma, desperate times called for desperate measures.  "Have you ever heard of such a ban for dogs?"  Now that was something I hadn't heard of before!

Why I Would Tell You Not to Buy a Holiday Home in Wayanad

Let me start with something that may sound strange coming from me. I live in Wayanad. I am building businesses here. I am involved in hospitality. I am working on holiday homes and nature based living. And still, if someone calls me and says, "Anup, I am thinking of buying a piece of land in Wayanad and building a homestay. What do you think?"   My first answer today is not, "Yes, go ahead." My first answer is, "Wait." Spend some time here. Understand Wayanad. Then decide. Because I have slowly realised that many people are not really investing in Wayanad. They are investing in a picture they have created in their minds about Wayanad. They see a beautiful piece of land. A mountain view. A stream running beside it. A lake somewhere nearby. Trees everywhere. Maybe the forest is just a few hundred metres away. The broker says, "Sir, this area is going to develop." The price still looks reasonable....

We Forgot Us

Srinivas was in his late fifties and, by every conventional definition, he was a successful man. He had spent most of his working life in one of the biggest corporate companies in Bengaluru. Good position, good salary, good house, good savings and a life that most people would look at and say, "What more do you want?" Saritha was working too. She was about six years younger than him, ambitious, independent and still very serious about her career. Their two children were doing well. One was working in the USA and the other was studying there.   From outside, the Srinivas family looked like one of those families who had got everything right.   Inside, something had slowly gone missing.   Their mornings were almost mechanical. They would wake up, go for their walk, come back, get ready and leave for work. Their offices were in different directions and the Bengaluru traffic made even a normal journey feel like a punishment. It was not that their offices were ver...

No Audience, Still Acting

I was having my tea the other morning, sitting on one of the small shacks near my construction site. A teenage girl walked past and waited at the bus stop across the road. It was clear something was special for her that day. Maybe her birthday, maybe an event in school. She kept adjusting her hair and her dress, and from the corner of her eye she checked if anyone was noticing her. That small moment pulled me into a long thought. Who are we when nobody is watching? I realised how often we live our life like someone is always looking at us. As if there is a stage, lights, and a crowd waiting to judge our next move. I lived that way too. Every smile measured, every word chosen, every silence planned. I knew how to act in rooms, how to fit in, how to be liked. What I did not see then was how temporary habits become permanent masks. Slowly the mask sticks so tight that one day you forget how your real face even looks. The mask was supposed to be something I take off when I feel safe. But a...
