An Experiment with watermelon

Watermelon Curry

Rekha and Nani had come home and we were having our coffee together, that is the time Reshma looked at me and said "The watermelon you got is not sweet at all".

Oh! Store guys said it will be sweet...that’s okay, lets make a curry out of that.

Rekha was surprised and said," What?" How can you make a curry out of Watermelon? Nani echoed the same thought and also went ahead and said "we all know you cook pretty decent   but Watermelon curry????!!!!", "Puchakaya curry! No Chance" (Telugu name for Watermelon).

Reshma with all the support from her friends said "Don't even try an experiment on us; we are not even eating that".

That sounded more like a challenge to be accepted....

I knew when kids and Reshma are around, I can't try the curry. They won't  allow it., I had read about this curry long time ago in one of the Magazines (Don't Remember the name of the Magazine) while travelling.

Next day morning, at our colony park, I saw many kids playing Holi. Considering this as the best opportunity, I asked Reshma to take our kids also to the park. So that I would get some time to experiment.... (If curry comes out good...keep or you know what...Ha ha ha).

Once they had left, putting all confidence together...I started

I cut the Watermelon into 1" pieces along with a little white portion (around 4 Cups) of it.
4-5 flakes of garlic - Crushed
Lemon Juice - (around 2 tsp)
Cumin Seeds - 1/2 a tsp
Pinch of Hing (Asafoedita)
Ginger cut into thin long strips
Dhania Powder 1/2 tsp (Coriander)
Red chilly Powder 1 tsp
A pinch of Haldi... (Turmeric powder)

Took around 1.5 cups to 2 cups of watermelon (Please remove the white portion, use only the upper soft pieces) with garlic, salt and lemon juice and grind, to make puree...

In a deep bowl pour a little oil, when hot, add cumin seeds, pinch of hing, ginger, coriander powder, red chilly powder and haldi, mix well for about 2 minutes.

Add the Watermelon pieces with white portions and stir well. Add the prepared puree and bring it to boil and cook for around five minutes....

Garnish it with green chillies and coriander leaves.

I was waiting eagerly for the kids to come, the curry was looking good......pretty excited...huh!!!

Without revealing the secret to Reshma and Kids, I served it to them. Tamanna was very happy. She said she would like to have early lunch to eat the curry, Reshma was surprised, she said it actually tastes good and very different. Curiously she asked what it was. I made her eat a watermelon from the curry. She was shocked and said, "We should not have mindset on food, this may not be my favorite but surely a very good curry (She likes spicy food)".

Curry got over, it was a hit!!!

I have to keep up the promise to make once more for Rekha nad Nani.

Why I Would Tell You Not to Buy a Holiday Home in Wayanad

Let me start with something that may sound strange coming from me. I live in Wayanad. I am building businesses here. I am involved in hospitality. I am working on holiday homes and nature based living. And still, if someone calls me and says, "Anup, I am thinking of buying a piece of land in Wayanad and building a homestay. What do you think?"   My first answer today is not, "Yes, go ahead." My first answer is, "Wait." Spend some time here. Understand Wayanad. Then decide. Because I have slowly realised that many people are not really investing in Wayanad. They are investing in a picture they have created in their minds about Wayanad. They see a beautiful piece of land. A mountain view. A stream running beside it. A lake somewhere nearby. Trees everywhere. Maybe the forest is just a few hundred metres away. The broker says, "Sir, this area is going to develop." The price still looks reasonable....

We Forgot Us

Srinivas was in his late fifties and, by every conventional definition, he was a successful man. He had spent most of his working life in one of the biggest corporate companies in Bengaluru. Good position, good salary, good house, good savings and a life that most people would look at and say, "What more do you want?" Saritha was working too. She was about six years younger than him, ambitious, independent and still very serious about her career. Their two children were doing well. One was working in the USA and the other was studying there.   From outside, the Srinivas family looked like one of those families who had got everything right.   Inside, something had slowly gone missing.   Their mornings were almost mechanical. They would wake up, go for their walk, come back, get ready and leave for work. Their offices were in different directions and the Bengaluru traffic made even a normal journey feel like a punishment. It was not that their offices were ver...

No Audience, Still Acting

I was having my tea the other morning, sitting on one of the small shacks near my construction site. A teenage girl walked past and waited at the bus stop across the road. It was clear something was special for her that day. Maybe her birthday, maybe an event in school. She kept adjusting her hair and her dress, and from the corner of her eye she checked if anyone was noticing her. That small moment pulled me into a long thought. Who are we when nobody is watching? I realised how often we live our life like someone is always looking at us. As if there is a stage, lights, and a crowd waiting to judge our next move. I lived that way too. Every smile measured, every word chosen, every silence planned. I knew how to act in rooms, how to fit in, how to be liked. What I did not see then was how temporary habits become permanent masks. Slowly the mask sticks so tight that one day you forget how your real face even looks. The mask was supposed to be something I take off when I feel safe. But a...
